Fabric-over-Foam Gaskets: The Precision of Automatic Cutting for Consistent EMI Performance

In EMI shielding applications requiring low compression force and high conductivity, Fabric-over-Foam gaskets are the preferred choice. However, their soft structure, a foam core wrapped in conductive fabric, makes custom cutting a critical operation: excessive pressure or an unsuitable blade can deform the profile, compromising shielding effectiveness.

To overcome this challenge, Euro Technologies has implemented a precision automatic cutting system specifically dedicated to these sensitive materials.

The Technical Challenge of "Soft" Materials

Fabric-over-Foam gaskets are designed to adapt to mechanical irregularities and wide closure tolerances. When supplied in spools, customers often handle the cutting internally, facing two main risks:

  1. Fabric Fraying: An imprecise cut can expose the foam core or create volatile conductive debris that is hazardous to electronics.
  2. “Mushrooming” Effect: Mechanical compression during manual or non-optimized cutting alters the profile shape at the ends, creating gaps where EMI interference can leak through.

Euro Technologies' Automated System

Our Cut-to-Length service for Fabric-over-Foam utilizes a synchronized feed and cut system that minimizes mechanical stress on the material. The advantages for the integrator are immediate:

  • Profile Integrity: Each segment maintains its original cross-section, ensuring a uniform contact surface along the entire gasket.
  • Millimetric Accuracy: Electronic length control ensures every piece is identical, which is essential for mass production in the Automotive and Telecom sectors.
  • Ready-to-install: Providing pre-cut pieces ready for application (often with pre-applied pressure-sensitive adhesive) drastically reduces manual assembly times.

Custom Solutions and Application Support

Through our partnership with Laird, Euro Technologies offers a wide range of profiles (rectangular, “D”, “C”, or “P” shapes) that can be customized not only in length but also in finishes. Whether for rapid prototyping or high-volume runs, our automated process ensures that the shielding performance tested in the lab is the same performance you receive on your finished product.
