EMI Shielding and Thermal Management Solutions for Defense

Defence - Euro Technologies

Military and defense applications demand uncompromised electromagnetic and thermal performance, engineered to operate with maximum reliability in the harshest environmental and operational conditions. Across land, naval, airborne, and space platforms, electronic systems face severe electromagnetic interference (EMI), mechanical shock, extreme thermal cycles, and stringent regulatory requirements.

As an official distributor and converter of Laird products, Euro Technologies supports defense design engineers in developing high-performance custom solutions fully compliant with international military standards and specifications (including MIL-DTL-83528, MIL-STD-461, and MIL-STD-810).

Technical Challenges in Military Electronics

Modern defense systems—including Radar equipment, C4ISR systems, avionics, electronic warfare (EW), and tactical vehicles—integrate high-frequency components and dense power electronics modules. This creates critical design challenges:

  • Electromagnetic Interference (EMI/EMC): Preventing degradation of radar and communication signals through high-attenuation shielding.
  • Cavity Resonances & RF Suppression: Managing high-frequency noise (sub-6 GHz and millimeter-wave frequencies) within electronic enclosures.
  • Advanced Thermal Dissipation: Efficiently dissipating heat generated by high-power semiconductors to prevent system failures.
  • Environmental Resistance & Low Outgassing: Protecting against harsh weather, aggressive fluids, corrosion, and meeting low outgassing requirements for vacuum/space applications and sensitive optical gear.

Product and Technologies for Defense

Euro Technologies provides a broad range of EMI shielding and thermal management products, customized to client drawings via precision die-cutting, CNC cutting, and automated dispensing processes.

1. Electrically Conductive Elastomers (MIL-DTL-83528)

Conductive elastomers combine EMI shielding effectiveness with environmental sealing (IP67/IP68). Formulated in silicone or fluorosilicone filled with conductive metallic particles (silver-aluminum, silver-copper, nickel-graphite), they ensure galvanic corrosion resistance and compliance with MIL-DTL-83528 specifications.

2. Microwave Absorbers & RF Suppression (Laird Eccosorb™)

The Eccosorb™ microwave absorber family is designed to attenuate reflections and suppress cavity resonances in high-frequency radars and sensors. Products like Eccosorb RF-LW provide lightweight properties, thermal stability, and low outgassing, ideal for defense applications.

3. Form-in-Place Dispensed Gaskets (FIPG)

For miniaturized and complex enclosures, Form-in-Place (FIP/FIPG) technology allows robotic deposition of conductive gaskets directly onto housing substrates. This ensures high precision, reduced assembly time, and optimal adhesion on narrow flanges.

4. Beryllium-Copper Fingerstock Contact Springs

Fingerstock contact springs deliver maximum electrical conductivity combined with high mechanical fatigue resistance. They are the benchmark solution for shielding doors, military rack cabinets, tactical shelters, and enclosures subject to frequent opening cycles.

5. Fabric-over-Foam Gaskets & Conductive Fabrics

Fabric-over-Foam gaskets combine high shielding effectiveness with extremely low compression forces, making them ideal for portable military devices and lightweight enclosures where mechanical deflection must be minimized.

6. Board Level Shielding (BLS)

One-piece and two-piece Board Level Shields (BLS) isolate critical PCB components, preventing cross-talk and mutual interference within multi-channel electronic assemblies.

7. Thermal Management & Thermal Interface Materials (TIM)

For power electronics thermal management, we offer a comprehensive selection of high-performance silicone and silicone-free Gap Fillers, Phase Change Materials, and thermal insulators engineered to transfer heat away from active components to heatsinks.

Q&A: Frequently Asked Questions on Defense Technologies

What are the best EMI (EMC) gaskets for land and naval military vehicles?

To withstand harsh operational and climatic conditions, the best solution is electrically conductive elastomers. Made of silicone filled with metallic particles, they provide excellent shielding against electromagnetic interference (EMI) combined with complete environmental protection (IP67/IP68).

FIPG (Form-in-Place Gaskets), or dispensed gaskets, are conductive polymers applied directly onto the housing via robotic systems. They are ideal for miniaturized defense devices like tactical radios or night vision goggles, allowing precise gasket application on minimal bead paths to save valuable space.

Extreme heat can compromise military radars. Therefore, a highly conductive thermal interface is essential. Silicone Gap Fillers and Phase Change Materials quickly absorb and transfer heat away from critical components to heatsinks, keeping the hardware fully operational.
